3 Days · 2 Nights · Bagnath Temple · Kumaon Culture · Pindari Base
Bageshwar is a district headquarters and pilgrimage town at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers in Kumaon, Uttarakhand. The town sits at 960 metres and is dominated by the Bagnath Temple, an ancient Shiva shrine that is the main reason most pilgrims come here. The temple is believed to be over a thousand years old and is particularly busy during the Shivratri festival when thousands of devotees arrive from across Kumaon.
Bageshwar is the administrative centre for a district that includes some of the most remote and scenic parts of Kumaon. The town is also the departure point for the Pindari Glacier trek, one of the easier high-altitude glacier treks in Uttarakhand. The route goes via Song, Loharkhet, Dhakuri, and Phurkia before reaching the glacier at 3820 metres. This is a 5-6 day trek from Bageshwar.
The Baijnath temple complex (17 km from Kausani, 48 km from Bageshwar) is a related historical site with 12th-century stone temples on the Gomti River. The Chandika Temple in Bageshwar and the Gauri Udiyar cave shrine are other religious sites in the town. The Saryu riverside ghats offer a peaceful setting in the evening. Bageshwar is typically included as a transit point or day visit in Kumaon tours combining Chaukori, Kausani, and Munsiyari.

Bageshwar is quieter than Almora but has real religious significance. The Bagnath Temple complex at the Saryu–Gomti confluence is best visited at dawn when the river is calm and other tourists are still asleep. The Uttarayani fair in January (Makar Sankranti) transforms the town — thousands come for the holy dip. Baijnath temples (20 km) deserve at least 2 hours — the stone carving quality is exceptional and the riverside setting is peaceful. For trekkers, Bageshwar is the staging point for Pindari Glacier, Kafni Glacier, and Sunderdhunga.
