8 Days · 4650m · Dunagiri & Changabang Views · Remote Chamoli Glacier
Bagini Glacier is a high-altitude glacier in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, located in the Niti valley area near the base of Dunagiri (7066m), Changabang (6864m), and Hathi Parvat (6727m). The glacier snout is at approximately 4650m and reaching it requires a multi-day trek through the Dhauli Ganga valley and the Ruing village area. This is a remote and rarely visited glacier trek with outstanding mountain scenery.
The route from Joshimath goes via Tapovan and Ruing village, then up the glacier valley. The landscape changes dramatically from the forested lower valley to the stark moraine and ice terrain near the glacier. Dunagiri is particularly impressive from the Bagini glacier viewpoint — the southeast face of the peak looms overhead. Changabang, considered one of the most technically demanding peaks in the Indian Himalaya, is also visible.
Bagini Glacier is for experienced trekkers. The daily distances are significant, the altitude is high, and the moraine terrain on approach to the glacier is physically demanding. It should not be attempted without prior experience of 4000m+ trekking. Dev Yatra organises Bagini Glacier trek packages from Haridwar with Joshimath transport, camping, meals, experienced guide from the Niti valley area, and porters.
Close-up views of Dunagiri (7066m) and the legendary Changabang (6864m). Among the most dramatic close-range peak views in Garhwal.
One of the less-visited glaciers in Chamoli. Extensive ice formations, seracs, and moraine landscape at 4650m.
Trek follows the beautiful Dhauli Ganga river valley through forest and riverside meadows in the lower section.
Small traditional village on the route. Local Bhotiya community maintains centuries-old Himalayan lifestyle.
SUMMER
Best access. Snow on glacier adds to scenery. Clear peak views. River crossings manageable.
AUTUMN
Post-monsoon clarity. Best Dunagiri views. Stable weather. Good photography.
INACCESSIBLE
Route snowbound. Niti valley inaccessible in winter.

Delhi to Haridwar 210 km (4-5 hrs via NH-58). Pickup from Delhi/Chandigarh/Dehradun on request.
Bagini Glacier is for serious trekkers who have already done the mainstream Garhwal routes. The Changabang and Kalanka walls above the glacier are some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Indian Himalaya. The approach from Ruing village (30 km from Joshimath) involves a steep forested climb and then rocky moraine — technical footwork required. No trails are marked beyond Ruing. A guide with specific Bagini experience is non-negotiable. The glacier is active — do not walk on the ice without crampons and guidance.
