About Bagji Bugyal Trek

Bagji Bugyal is a high-altitude alpine meadow in the Uttarkashi district of Garhwal Himalaya, situated at around 3500m. It is among the less commercially explored bugyals in the Uttarkashi region — far fewer trekkers come here compared to Dayara Bugyal or the Kedarkantha area. The meadow gives views of the Gangotri and Garhwal Himalayan range including Bandarpunch and Swargarohini peaks.

The trail to Bagji Bugyal starts from villages in the Tons river valley or Bhagirathi valley area of Uttarkashi district. The approach goes through dense forest — predominantly oak, rhododendron, and deodar — before the terrain opens into the high meadow. The wildflower season (May-June) brings colour to the meadow, and autumn (September-October) gives the clearest views of the surrounding peaks.

Bagji Bugyal is a good choice for those who have already done the popular Uttarkashi-area treks (Kedarkantha, Dayara Bugyal) and want to explore something less known in the same region. Dev Yatra organises Bagji Bugyal trek packages from Haridwar with Uttarkashi transport, local guide, camping, and all meals.

Before You Trek Bagji Bugyal

Bagji Bugyal is a good option specifically because very few people go there. The Uttarkashi district has several popular routes (Kedarkantha, Dayara) and Bagji is the alternative for those who prefer not to share a bugyal with dozens of other camps. The meadow at 3500m is expansive and the Gangotri range views are similar to Dayara but from a different angle. Take a good down jacket even in May or September — bugyal nights are cold regardless of season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is Bagji Bugyal different from Dayara Bugyal?
Both are in Uttarkashi. Dayara Bugyal is more known and sees more visitors, with GMOU skiing in winter. Bagji is less commercial and wilder. Both give Gangotri range views but from different angles.
Q. Is Bagji Bugyal trek suitable for beginners?
Moderate grade. Suitable for those with basic fitness and some hill walking experience. No technical sections. The 7 km climb to the bugyal is steady but manageable.
Q. Can Bagji and Dayara Bugyal be combined?
Yes. Both are in Uttarkashi district. A 7-8 day trip from Haridwar can cover both if trailheads are accessible from the same base.
Q. Are there any facilities on the Bagji Bugyal route?
Very limited. This is a remote trail. We carry all camping equipment and food from Uttarkashi. No guesthouses on the trail above the base village.
Q. How far is Uttarkashi from Haridwar?
About 170 km via Rishikesh, Tehri, and Chamba. Drive takes 5-6 hours.
Q. What is a bugyal?
Bugyal is the Garhwali word for high-altitude alpine meadow, typically at 3000–4500 metres. These broad, flat grasslands above the treeline are used as summer pastures by nomadic herders. Famous bugyals in Uttarakhand include Dayara, Ali, Bedni, Har Ki Dun valley, and Panwali Kantha. Most bugyals are excellent trekking destinations.
Q. Is Bagji Bugyal crowded?
No — Bagji Bugyal is one of the least-visited bugyals in Uttarakhand. Unlike the more popular Dayara Bugyal or Ali-Bedni route, Bagji sees very few trekking groups. It is ideal for those who want genuine isolation in a Himalayan meadow landscape.
Q. How difficult is the Bagji Bugyal Trek?
The Bagji Bugyal Trek is rated Easy to Moderate . The route covers approximately 20 km reaching an altitude of 3150m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Bagji Bugyal.
Q. What is the best time for Bagji Bugyal Trek?
The ideal season for the Bagji Bugyal Trek is May to June, September to October . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Bagji Bugyal departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Wan village from Haridwar?
Wan village — the base/starting point for the Bagji Bugyal Trek — is approximately 290 km from Haridwar , a drive of 7–9 hours. Dev Yatra includes comfortable vehicle transport from Haridwar to the trek base in all Bagji Bugyal packages. Road conditions on mountain routes can vary by season — our experienced drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Q. What permits are needed for Bagji Bugyal Trek?
Trekkers on the Bagji Bugyal Trek must carry valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or voter ID). Forest department entry permits may be required for restricted zones. Dev Yatra handles all permit formalities on your behalf before departure — no separate government office visits required. Simply share your ID details at booking and we take care of the rest for your Bagji Bugyal.
