6 Days · 12,100 ft · Frozen Lake · Trishul & Nanda Ghunti Views
The brahmatal trek is a high-altitude frozen lake trail in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, starting from Lohajung village (1700m). Brahmatal trek distance is approximately 22 km over 4 trekking days, with the highest point — Brahmatal Top — at 3687m (12,100 ft). In winter, both Bekaltal lake (2600m) and Brahmatal lake (3687m) freeze completely, surrounded by snow-heavy oak and rhododendron forest. The brahmatal trek altitude gain is steady and manageable, making it ideal for first-time winter trekkers and those seeking a step up from Kedarkantha.
The trail is celebrated for the extraordinary views of Mt. Trishul (7120m) and Nanda Ghunti (6309m) — among the most dramatic peak sightings on any short Uttarakhand winter trek. Brahmatal trek difficulty level is Easy-Moderate; daily walking distance is 5–10 km on snow. Brahmatal trek temperature in January drops to -15°C to -20°C at upper camps — proper layering and a rated sleeping bag are essential. Best time is December to February for full snow and frozen lakes; March–April for rhododendron bloom and clear mountain views; October–November for first snowfall and excellent peak clarity.
The brahmatal trek starting point is Lohajung (also spelled Lohajung), approximately 235 km from Haridwar via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag — a drive of 8–9 hours. Brahmatal trek from Dehradun is around 260 km. Dev Yatra arranges complete packages from Haridwar with transport to Lohajung base, all camping arrangements, cook, certified local guide, forest permits, and safety equipment.
Mt. Trishul (7120m) and Nanda Ghunti (6309m) are clearly visible from Brahmatal top. Among the best mountain views on any Kumaon-Garhwal winter trek.
The lake at 3687m freezes completely in December-February. Walking on a frozen Himalayan lake is a unique experience.
Lower trail through thick rhododendron forest with good birdlife. Very colourful in spring (March-April).
A smaller lake on the descent route. Good for camping and forest reflection photography.
BEST SEASON

SPRING
Rhododendrons bloom. Lake unfreezing. Good trail conditions. Less snow but scenic.
PRE WINTER
First winter snow. Clear skies. Good Himalayan views. Lake may not be fully frozen yet.

Brahmatal trek in January–February offers the deepest snow but also the harshest cold. February is often the sweet spot — less extreme cold than January, still good snow. The Bekaltal lake (Day 2) is frozen and snow-covered — it looks extraordinary but requires caution on the approach. The trail from Lohajung (the base) is not well-marked in heavy snow — do not do this trek without an experienced local guide. Lohajung is 220 km from Kathgodam (8–9 hrs by road). Winter road conditions are unpredictable — always have a contingency plan if the Lohajung road is blocked. Carry sun protection — snow reflection at 3500m+ causes serious sunburn even in winter.
The brahmatal trek is one of the finest frozen lake trails in India, set in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at the heart of the Kumaon-Garhwal boundary. Starting point is Lohajung village (1700m) — approximately 235 km from Haridwar and 260 km from Dehradun via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag. Total distance is 22 km over 4 trekking days, reaching Brahmatal Top at 3687m (12,100 ft). The altitude gain is steady — 400–600m per day — manageable for fit beginners and rewarding for experienced trekkers seeking better mountain views than Kedarkantha can offer.
Best time is December to February for the classic experience — both Bekaltal (2600m) and Brahmatal lake (3687m) are fully frozen, summit views of Mt. Trishul (7120m) and Nanda Ghunti (6309m) are exceptional on clear days, and temperature at upper camps drops to -15°C to -20°C. March and April bring rhododendron bloom in the lower forest; October–November gives first snowfall and outstanding peak clarity. Difficulty level is Easy-Moderate — the trail is non-technical and well-guided, but snow depth in January-February demands solid layering, waterproof boots, and gaiters. Is it safe? Yes — with an experienced local guide and proper gear, this is one of the safer high-altitude winter trails in Uttarakhand.
The route passes through three distinct zones: dense oak and rhododendron forest from Lohajung to Bekaltal (Day 2 camp at 2600m), open snow meadows from Bekaltal to Brahmatal camp (Day 3, 3400m), and the final summit ridge to Brahmatal Top (Day 4, 3687m). Walking on the frozen lake is one of the most distinctive experiences on any Himalayan winter trek. Common comparisons — vs Kedarkantha: Kedarkantha offers a better 360° summit panorama; the brahmatal trek wins on mountain views (Trishul, Nanda Ghunti) and the frozen lake experience. Vs Kuari Pass: Kuari is higher and more demanding; this route suits first and second-time winter trekkers better.
