Chakrata is a cantonment hill station in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand at 2118 metres above sea level, located in the Jaunsar-Bawar region. The town is an active Indian Army cantonment and Inner Line Permit (ILP) was required for non-residents until recently (now removed for most areas). Chakrata is surrounded by thick forests of oak, rhododendron, and deodar, and the region around it is home to the Jaunsari tribal community with a distinct culture different from mainstream Garhwal.
Tiger Falls, 20 km from Chakrata, is one of the highest direct waterfalls in India at about 100 metres. Reached by a 1.5 km walk through forest from the road, the waterfall cascades into a natural pool good for swimming. Chilmiri Neck viewpoint, 3 km from Chakrata, gives one of the best sunrise panoramas of the Himalayan range including Bandarpunch, Black Peak, and other Garhwal peaks. The view is particularly clear on winter mornings.
Deoban, 13 km from Chakrata, is a thick forest of deodar trees with a wildlife sanctuary hosting ghoral, musk deer, and various Himalayan birds. The meadow section of Deoban has good views and is a pleasant short trek destination. Kanasar, 8 km from Chakrata, is an open meadow with pine forests good for camping. The Jaunsari tribal villages around Chakrata have interesting architecture with multi-storey wooden houses and a polyandry tradition historically associated with the Pandavas.

Chakrata is genuinely off the tourist radar — most people who go there feel like they discovered something. Tiger Falls (312 feet, one of India's highest single-drop waterfalls) alone is worth the trip. The 1.5 km walk to the falls base is easy. Carry shoes you don't mind getting wet — you'll want to stand in the pool below. Deoban (3 km from town) requires a 4WD or a short walk from the road — good forest and views of the snow peaks on clear winter mornings. The Jaunsar-Bawar villages around Chakrata have traditional wooden houses and a culture distinct from mainstream Garhwal. Chakrata requires a permit for some areas as it is a cantonment — your hotel can assist.
