Mussoorie, called the "Queen of Hills," is one of the most popular hill stations in northern India. Situated at 2005 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, it sits on a long ridge of the Shivalik range with the Doon Valley below and the higher Himalayan ranges to the north. The Mall Road, which runs along the ridge, is the social and commercial heart of the town — with shops, restaurants, and views on both sides. On a clear day, the Himalayan snows including Bandarpunch, Swargarohini, and Gangotri peaks are visible from the upper portions of the town.

Kempty Falls, 15 km from Mussoorie, is the most visited waterfall in the Garhwal hills. The water drops about 40 metres into a pool below and the area has been developed for swimming and picnicking. Gun Hill, at 2122m, is the second highest point in Mussoorie and is reached by a 400-metre ropeway from the Mall Road. The views from Gun Hill on a clear day include the Himalayan range to the north and the Doon Valley to the south. Lal Tibba is the highest point in Mussoorie at 2275m and has a telescope through which snow peaks can be viewed.

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is 33 km below Mussoorie in the Doon Valley and is usually combined in the same itinerary. Robbers Cave (Guchhu Pani), 8 km from Dehradun, is a natural gorge with a stream running through it — a popular local picnic spot. The Forest Research Institute (FRI) is a magnificent colonial building with a museum about Indian forests. Sahastradhara (sulphur springs) and Tapkeshwar Temple are other Dehradun sights. Dev Yatra plans Mussoorie & Dehradun tour packages from Haridwar with comfortable accommodation and complete sightseeing.

Planning Your Mussoorie & Dehradun Visit

Mussoorie is best enjoyed early morning before the crowds arrive, especially on weekends and in May-June when the town gets very busy. Mall Road is packed on evenings — try early morning walks for a more peaceful experience. Kempty Falls is crowded on weekends; visit on a weekday or early morning. The Cable Car to Gun Hill operates till 7 PM and the queue can be long in season — go in the morning. Lal Tibba has a telescope (small fee) with the best view of snow peaks on clear winter mornings.

Landour, 3 km from Mussoorie and 500m higher, is quieter and worth a half-day visit for the old colonial buildings and good views. Ruskin Bond's house is in Landour — the author can sometimes be spotted at Prakash's store in Landour Bazaar. Dehradun is modern and urban but Robbers Cave (entry fee, closed Mondays) is a unique natural experience. The Forest Research Institute visit needs about 2 hours — the building and gardens are impressive. Clock Tower in Dehradun is good for local shopping and street food.
