About Dharansi Pass Trek

Dharansi Pass (4580m) is a high route that provides an alternative entry into the Valley of Flowers National Park in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The standard entry to Valley of Flowers is via Ghangaria (from Govindghat). Dharansi Pass offers a scenic ridgeline route that approaches the valley from the Bhyundar valley side, giving a completely different perspective on the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve landscape.

The trek via Dharansi Pass starts from the Bhyundar village area (in the Bhyundar valley, also called the Valley of Gods) and climbs to the pass. From the pass, one can descend into the main Valley of Flowers or continue on the ridgeline giving views of Hathi Parvat, Gauri Parvat, and the upper Zanskar-Garhwal range. The route is a good choice for trekkers who want to see the Valley of Flowers but go beyond the standard tourist trail experience.

Dharansi Pass is best in July-September when the Valley of Flowers is in full bloom — the official entry season for the national park. The combination of the high pass approach with the wildflower valley makes for one of the more rewarding Chamoli trek experiences. Dev Yatra organises Dharansi Pass trek packages from Haridwar with Joshimath transport, camping, meals, and guide.

Planning Valley of Flowers Trek

Valley of Flowers is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites in India where you genuinely walk through the heritage — 300+ wildflower species in bloom in July–August. The valley charges a daily entry fee (Forest Department). You are not allowed to camp inside the valley or pick any flowers. The path inside the valley has no shade — wear a hat and sunscreen. Ghangaria is the only accommodation base — book well ahead in peak season (August). Hemkund Sahib (6 km above Ghangaria at 4329m) is at a serious altitude — go slow, acclimatise one night at Ghangaria first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Dharansi Pass?
Dharansi Pass (4580m) is a high ridge pass on the boundary of the Bhyundar valley and the Valley of Flowers National Park in Chamoli. It provides an alternative high-route access into the Valley of Flowers from the Bhyundar side.
Q. When is Valley of Flowers open?
Valley of Flowers National Park is officially open July 1 to October 15. Peak flower season is July-August. The park requires an entry permit (paid at Ghangaria).
Q. Can Dharansi Pass be done in reverse?
Yes. Starting from Bhyundar, crossing Dharansi to Ghangaria, and then doing the regular Valley of Flowers return is also a good route. The direction depends on where you start (Joshimath/Govindghat).
Q. Is Hemkund Sahib on this route?
Yes. Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara (4329m) is a short trek from Ghangaria. We include a Hemkund day in the 7-day itinerary. It is one of the highest Gurudwaras in India.
Q. How difficult is Dharansi Pass?
Difficult. The 4580m altitude and steep approaches on both sides make it harder than the standard Valley of Flowers day walk. Prior trekking experience and good fitness required.
Q. When do flowers bloom in Valley of Flowers?
The Valley of Flowers is at its most spectacular from mid-July to mid-August when hundreds of wildflower species including Himalayan blue poppy, cobra lily, anemones, potentilla, and many orchid species are in full bloom. July 15 – August 15 is the peak bloom window. September has fewer flowers but clearer mountain views.
Q. Is Hemkund Sahib only for Sikhs?
Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara at 4329m is open to all faiths and nationalities. Langar (free community meal) is served to all visitors. The lake (Hemkund Lake) is sacred to both Sikhs (Guru Gobind Singh meditated here in a previous life) and Hindus (Lakshmana Temple is adjacent).
Q. How difficult is the Dharansi Pass Trek?
The Dharansi Pass Trek is rated Difficult . The route covers approximately 45 km reaching an altitude of 4600m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Dharansi Pass.
Q. What is the best time for Dharansi Pass Trek?
