7 Days · 4408m Darwa Pass · Sacred Lake · Golden Mahseer · Ganesha Birthplace
Dodital is a sacred freshwater lake in the Uttarkashi district at 3307 metres, surrounded by thick conifer forest. The lake is famous for the golden mahseer (Tor putitora) fish that inhabit its waters and are protected. Dodital is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha in local tradition, making it a place of both natural and religious significance. A small temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga sits on the lake shore.
The Darwa Pass (4408m / 14,435 ft) is reached on the extended version of the Dodital trek, continuing above the lake through high ridges and moraines. From Darwa Pass the views of the Gangotri group peaks — Bandarpunch, Jaonli, and Swargarohini — are exceptional. The complete Dodital to Darwa Pass circuit makes it a highly rewarding 7-day trek that combines a sacred lake with a serious high-altitude pass crossing.
The trek starts from Sangamchatti village (1700m), reachable from Uttarkashi (22 km). The trail passes through oak, rhododendron, and conifer forest before reaching Dodital, and then climbs through alpine terrain to the pass. Dev Yatra organises complete Dodital-Darwa Pass trek packages from Haridwar with all logistics — Uttarkashi transport, camping, meals, experienced guide, and permits.

Dodital lake is one of the most peaceful overnight camping destinations in Uttarkashi. The 22 km return trek (Agoda to Dodital) is moderate — a day up, a day back — but most people spend a night at the lakeside to see dawn on the water. The golden mahseer in the lake are large and remarkably clear in the still water at dawn. The lake is sacred so fishing is not permitted. Darwa Pass extension (5 km above the lake, 4110m) gives outstanding views of Bandarpunch — worth doing if you have an extra day.
