About Gulabi Kantha Trek

Gulabi Kantha is a lesser-known high-altitude meadow in the Uttarkashi district of Garhwal, named for the pink flowers (rhododendrons and wildflowers) that colour the meadow in the spring months. The area sits at around 3200m and is reached by a forest trail from villages in the Tons River valley. The lack of crowds and commercial development makes it one of the most genuine wilderness trekking experiences in Uttarakhand.

The trail to Gulabi Kantha passes through thick deodar and oak forest before entering open meadow zones. The views from the upper meadow extend towards the Tons valley hills and the distant Garhwal range. The path is not well signposted and a local guide familiar with the area is essential. Bird diversity in the forest zone is high, and the trek gives you a good chance to see Himalayan wildlife including ghoral and barking deer.

Dev Yatra organises Gulabi Kantha trek packages from Haridwar with local Uttarkashi-based guides who know the trail well. The trek is suited for those who want to avoid the more commercialised routes like Kedarkantha and experience genuine Garhwali forest and meadow terrain. Best time is April-May for flower season and September-October for clear views.

Before Gulabi Kantha Trek

Gulabi Kantha is best in July–August when the pink primulas are in full flower — coming here in September for views but missing the flowers defeats the purpose. The ridge is 3500m and on the approach to Valley of Flowers. It gives a high perspective on the Bhyundar Valley and the VoF below. It is much quieter than the main valley floor. Trail finding requires a guide — this is not a marked route. Carry rain gear as the monsoon is the best season and afternoon showers are common.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is it called Gulabi Kantha?
Gulabi means pink in Hindi/Garhwali. Kantha means meadow ridge. The area gets a pink hue in April-May when rhododendrons and wildflowers bloom across the high meadow.
Q. Is Gulabi Kantha trek crowded?
No. It is one of the less-visited treks in Uttarkashi area. You are unlikely to encounter more than a handful of other trekking groups. This is one of its main appeals.
Q. Is a guide mandatory for Gulabi Kantha?
Strongly recommended. The trail is not well marked and the forest section can be confusing. A local Uttarkashi guide familiar with the terrain is essential for safety.
Q. What is the best base for Gulabi Kantha?
Uttarkashi is the nearest major town. From Haridwar it is 170 km. We arrange accommodation in Uttarkashi and a local guide who knows the Gulabi Kantha trail.
Q. Can this trek be combined with Dayara Bugyal?
Yes. Both are in the Uttarkashi district and can be combined in a 7-8 day itinerary — Gulabi Kantha via Tons valley side, then Dayara Bugyal via Raithal side.
Q. When do flowers bloom at Gulabi Kantha?
Gulabi Kantha is at its most spectacular in July–August when pink primulas, potentillas, and Himalayan wildflowers cover the ridge. The flowering coincides with the peak Valley of Flowers bloom season. September has fewer flowers but better mountain views and drier conditions.
Q. Is Gulabi Kantha a difficult trek?
Gulabi Kantha is moderate difficulty — the ridge is reached by a 3–4 hour climb from the Bhyundar Valley. The trail is less defined than the main VoF route and requires a local guide. Good physical fitness is needed but no technical skills are required.
Q. How difficult is the Gulabi Kantha Trek?
The Gulabi Kantha Trek is rated Easy to Moderate . The route covers approximately 18 km reaching an altitude of 3500m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Gulabi Kantha.
Q. What is the best time for Gulabi Kantha Trek?
The ideal season for the Gulabi Kantha Trek is May to June, September to October . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Gulabi Kantha departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Bansi Narayan from Haridwar?
Bansi Narayan — the base/starting point for the Gulabi Kantha Trek — is approximately 220 km from Haridwar , a drive of 6–8 hours. Dev Yatra includes comfortable vehicle transport from Haridwar to the trek base in all Gulabi Kantha packages. Road conditions on mountain routes can vary by season — our experienced drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
