3 Days · 2 Nights · Ardhnareshwar Temple · Ukhimath · Deoria Tal
Guptakashi is a small town in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand at 1319 metres, situated on the Kedarnath pilgrimage route. The town has an important temple — the Vishwanath Temple with an Ardhnareshwar form of Shiva-Parvati and the Manikarnika Kund, a sacred water tank. Guptakashi is a stopping point for pilgrims heading to Kedarnath and has a significant place in Hindu mythology.
Ukhimath, 7 km from Guptakashi, is the winter home of the Kedarnath deity. When Kedarnath Temple closes in November, the deity (utsav murti) is brought down to Ukhimath in a ceremonial procession and worshipped here through the winter months. The Ukhimath temple is thus the place to worship Kedarnath in winter. Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, and Rudranath deities also have their winter seats nearby.
Deoria Tal lake (2438m) is 14 km from Ukhimath with a 3 km forest trek from Sari village. The lake reflects the Chaukhamba peaks and is a popular overnight camping destination. Chopta (the base for Tungnath temple trek) is 30 km from Ukhimath. This route through Ukhimath, Chopta, and Gopeshwar is an interesting alternative to the main Kedarnath-Badrinath highway. Dev Yatra plans Guptakashi-Ukhimath tour packages from Haridwar with comfortable accommodation and options to add Deoria Tal and Chopta.

The Kedarnath trek is the hardest part of Char Dham Yatra — 19 km on foot with 1700m altitude gain. Most people underestimate this. If you are not used to walking and hills, arrange a horse or doli at Gaurikund — there is no shame in this. The horse takes about 5 hours up. Helicopter from Phata or Sersi takes 7 minutes. Book helicopter tickets online as soon as dates are decided — they sell out weeks in advance during peak season (May and September). Altitude at Kedarnath is 3583m — acclimatise at Guptkashi or Sitapur (one night) before the trek.
