Haridwar and Rishikesh are best covered together as a 3-day trip. Spend Day 1 in Haridwar — arrive early enough to explore the market and ghats before the evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri. The aarti starts around 6 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer. Reach 30–45 minutes early to get a place on the steps near the ghat. The ghats fill up fast, especially on weekends. Haridwar is a completely vegetarian city — no non-veg food or alcohol anywhere.
Rishikesh is the adventure hub. River rafting is best booked in advance during peak season (October–November and March–June). The 16 km stretch is suitable for all ages including families. Laxman Jhula bridge is currently closed to pedestrians — Ram Jhula is nearby and gives the same views. The Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's old retreat) is 2 km from Ram Jhula and has an entry fee; the graffiti murals inside are popular with visitors.
