Haridwar is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, situated at the foot of the Himalayas where the Ganga River enters the plains. The name means "Gateway to God" (Hari = God, Dwar = Gateway) and the city has been a pilgrimage centre for thousands of years. Har Ki Pauri is the central ghat in Haridwar where the evening Ganga Aarti takes place every day at sunset — one of the most visually and spiritually powerful rituals in India, attended by thousands of devotees daily.
The Mansa Devi Temple sits on Bilwa Parvat hill above the city and is reached by a cable car (ropeway) or a steep 1.5 km walk. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mansa Devi who is believed to fulfill wishes. Chandi Devi Temple, across the Ganga on Neel Parvat hill, is similarly reached by ropeway and is another important goddess shrine. Both temples are part of the Panch Tirth pilgrimage circuit of Haridwar. Rajaji National Park, just 10 km from Haridwar, is a good wildlife destination with elephants, leopards, deer, and over 300 bird species.
The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Haridwar, is the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on Earth. The Ardh Kumbh is held every 6 years. Even in non-Kumbh years, Haridwar is always busy with pilgrims coming for bath, ritual offerings, and temple visits. The city has a large market area around the ghats with shops selling religious items, Ayurvedic products, and local snacks. Dev Yatra, headquartered in Haridwar, offers well-organised local Haridwar tour packages and can arrange extended tours to Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and beyond.
Evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most sacred and visually memorable experiences in India. Thousands attend daily.

Haridwar gets extremely crowded during Kumbh Mela (every 6 and 12 years), Shivratri, and Navratri. If you plan to visit during these festivals, book accommodation at least 2–3 months in advance — hotels fill up fast and prices triple. Outside these periods, booking 1–2 weeks ahead is fine. One thing most visitors regret: skipping the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. Even if you are not religious, the sight of thousands of diyas floating on the dark Ganga at sunset is something you will not forget. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to get a spot near the ghat railing. The ropeway to Mansa Devi has a long queue after 10 AM — go first thing in the morning. Rajaji safari is best on the morning slot (6–10 AM). Haridwar is a vegetarian city — no non-veg food is served in most restaurants, and alcohol is not sold anywhere in the city limits.
