3 Days · 2 Nights · 124 Shiva Temples · Ancient Dham · Deodar Forest
Jageshwar is an ancient pilgrimage site in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, situated at 1870 metres in a valley surrounded by tall deodar cedar trees. The site has a cluster of 124 ancient stone temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, built between the 7th and 12th centuries. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines in India and holds significant importance in Hindu religion. The Jageswar temple at the centre of the complex is the main shrine.
The temples are built in the Nagara style of architecture and are well-preserved despite their age. The complex sits along a stream and the tall deodar forest around it gives the place a distinctly peaceful and sacred atmosphere. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the site and a small museum at the entrance displays stone carvings and artefacts found during excavations.
Artola and Dandeshwar are subsidiary temples a short distance from the main cluster, worth visiting for those interested in the architectural details. The Vriddha Jageshwar temple, 6 km uphill from the main site, is a quieter and older shrine reached by a forest path. Almora, 37 km away, can be combined as a cultural stop with Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and Chitai Golu Devta Temple. Dev Yatra arranges Jageshwar Dham tour packages from Haridwar with temple visit, forest walks, and comfortable stays.

Jageshwar is unlike any other temple complex in Uttarakhand — the 124 ancient stone temples in a narrow valley under 1000-year-old deodar trees create an atmosphere you will not find anywhere else. Come on a weekday morning if possible — weekend afternoons can get crowded. Hire the ASI guide at the main gate — without explanation, the temples are just stones; with context, the stone carvings and temple histories become fascinating. The 15-minute walk along the stream inside the complex is as pleasant as the temples themselves.
