Jim Corbett National Park, established in 1936, is India's oldest national park. It is situated in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand and covers approximately 520 sq km of sal forest, grassland (known as chaurs), riverbeds, and Himalayan foothills. The park is named after Jim Corbett — the legendary British hunter turned conservationist and author of Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Corbett is one of the founding parks of Project Tiger and has one of the highest concentrations of Bengal tigers in India.

The park is divided into six safari zones: Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi, and Sonanadi. Each zone has a different character — Dhikala is the largest and has the highest tiger density but requires a stay inside the park (limited accommodation). Bijrani and Dhela zones are popular for day safaris with excellent wildlife sightings. Durga Devi zone (along the Ramganga river) is known for leopards, birds, and Mahseer fishing. Jhirna and Dhela zones stay open year-round even during the monsoon closure.

Beyond tigers, Corbett has Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears, Himalayan black bears, mugger crocodiles, gharials, king cobras, and over 650 species of birds including the great hornbill, Pallas's fish eagle, ruddy shelduck, and numerous Himalayan species. The Ramganga river runs through the park and is excellent for birding. Dev Yatra plans Jim Corbett safari packages from Haridwar with good jungle resort accommodation, pre-booked jeep safaris, and experienced naturalist guides.

Planning Your Jim Corbett Visit

Safari permits for Jim Corbett must be booked in advance — popular zones like Bijrani and Dhikala fill up quickly in peak season (November to March). We book all permits before your travel date. Safaris are available in two slots: morning (6 AM, 3 hours) and afternoon (3 PM or 4 PM, 3 hours). Morning safaris have the best tiger sighting probability as tigers are most active at dawn. The standard safari vehicle is a 6-seater open-top jeep (gypsy) — bring a fleece or jacket as it is cold in the early morning even in November.

Tiger sightings are never guaranteed in the wild — this is nature, not a zoo. But Corbett has one of the highest tiger densities in India and November–March gives the best chances. Dhikala zone requires a stay inside the park (very limited accommodation, must be booked months in advance through KMVN). For day visitors, Bijrani and Dhela zones are the best options. Even without a tiger sighting, Corbett is extraordinary — elephant herds, spotted deer, crocodiles on the riverbank, and the bird diversity alone make it worth the visit.
