About Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek

Kalpeshwar and Rudranath are two of the five Panch Kedar temples in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Kalpeshwar temple (2200m) in the Urgam valley near Helang is dedicated to the matted hair (jata) of Lord Shiva. It is the only one of the five Kedars open year-round. The temple is reached by a 1 km short walk from Urgam village, through a naturally lit rock cavern. Kalpeshwar is the starting or ending point for those doing the Panch Kedar circuit.

Rudranath temple (2286m) enshrines the face (mukha) of Lord Shiva and is the most remote of the five Panch Kedar shrines. It is reached by a 2-3 day forest trek from Sagar village (via Mandal, 14 km from Chamoli). The trail passes through Brahma Kamal meadows and dense Rhododendron forest. Views from the meadow sections near Rudranath include Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchchuli peaks.

Combining Kalpeshwar and Rudranath in one trip makes excellent sense as both are in the Chamoli district and the approach roads pass through the same area. Dev Yatra organises combined Kalpeshwar-Rudranath trek packages from Haridwar with all transport, accommodation, guide, and meals. This combination is suitable for those who want to do the Panch Kedar gradually, two temples at a time.

Planning Kalpeshwar–Rudranath

Kalpeshwar and Rudranath are best treated as a 2-in-1 itinerary from Gopeshwar. Kalpeshwar (2200m, always open) is the day-trip warm-up; Rudranath (3-day trek via Sagar) is the main objective. Rudranath approaches through one of the finest rhododendron forests in Garhwal — in April–May the entire trail blazes red and pink. The bugyal (Panar Bugyal) just before the Rudranath temple area is a carpeted meadow that will stay in memory. Both temples close in winter and reopen in April.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does Kalpeshwar temple enshrine?
Kalpeshwar is dedicated to the jata (matted hair) of Lord Shiva. Of the five Panch Kedar temples, each enshrines a different part of Shiva — Kedarnath (back/hump), Tungnath (arms), Rudranath (face), Madhyamaheshwar (navel), Kalpeshwar (hair).
Q. When does Rudranath temple open?
Rudranath temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April-May, dates vary by year) and closes on Vijaya Dashami or Diwali (October). The exact dates are announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee each year.
Q. What is the Brahma Kamal flower?
Brahma Kamal (Saussurea obvallata) is the state flower of Uttarakhand. It is a rare alpine flower that blooms July-August at high altitudes in the Himalaya. Named after Lord Brahma. The Rudranath trail and surrounding meadows are a good habitat for this flower.
Q. Is the Rudranath trail difficult?
Moderate difficulty. The 14 km trail from Sagar involves a steady climb through forest and meadow. The trail is well-used and partially marked. Guide recommended for the first-timer.
Q. Can Kalpeshwar be done in a day from Chamoli?
Yes. Chamoli to Urgam to Kalpeshwar and back can be done in a long day (50 km drive + 2 km walk). Many pilgrims do it as a day visit on the way back from Badrinath. We can arrange a half-day stop if combining with other sites.
Q. Is Kalpeshwar temple open in winter?
Yes, Kalpeshwar is the only one of the Panch Kedar temples that remains open throughout the year, including in winter. The other four Kedar shrines close in October/November for winter and reopen in April/May. This makes Kalpeshwar accessible to winter pilgrims as well.
Q. What does Rudranath look like?
Rudranath is a natural rock formation resembling the face of Lord Shiva. The temple is a simple stone structure set in a bugyal (alpine meadow) at 2286 metres, surrounded by rhododendron forest and overlooking the Mandakini and Alaknanda watershed. The natural setting is considered one of the most serene and beautiful of all the Kedar shrines.
Q. How difficult is the Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek?
The Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek is rated Moderate to Difficult . The route covers approximately 28 km reaching an altitude of 3600m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Kalpeshwar Rudranath.
Q. What is the best time for Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek?
The ideal season for the Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek is May to June, September to October . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Kalpeshwar Rudranath departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Helang / Sagar from Haridwar?
Helang / Sagar — the base/starting point for the Kalpeshwar Rudranath Trek — is approximately 290 km from Haridwar , a drive of 7–9 hours.
