6 Days · Two Panch Kedar Shrines · Remote Forest Treks · Helang & Urgam
Kalpeshwar and Rudranath are two of the five Panch Kedar temples in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Kalpeshwar temple (2200m) in the Urgam valley near Helang is dedicated to the matted hair (jata) of Lord Shiva. It is the only one of the five Kedars open year-round. The temple is reached by a 1 km short walk from Urgam village, through a naturally lit rock cavern. Kalpeshwar is the starting or ending point for those doing the Panch Kedar circuit.
Rudranath temple (2286m) enshrines the face (mukha) of Lord Shiva and is the most remote of the five Panch Kedar shrines. It is reached by a 2-3 day forest trek from Sagar village (via Mandal, 14 km from Chamoli). The trail passes through Brahma Kamal meadows and dense Rhododendron forest. Views from the meadow sections near Rudranath include Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Panchchuli peaks.
Combining Kalpeshwar and Rudranath in one trip makes excellent sense as both are in the Chamoli district and the approach roads pass through the same area. Dev Yatra organises combined Kalpeshwar-Rudranath trek packages from Haridwar with all transport, accommodation, guide, and meals. This combination is suitable for those who want to do the Panch Kedar gradually, two temples at a time.
Only one of the five Kedars open in winter. Natural rock cavern approach. Shiva jata (matted hair) shrine.
2-3 day forest trek through rhododendron forest, Brahma Kamal meadows. Most remote and scenic of the five Kedars.
Nanda Devi (7816m), Trishul, and Panchchuli visible from meadow sections near Rudranath.
Brahma Kamal (Saussurea obvallata) — state flower of Uttarakhand — blooms in the meadows on the Rudranath trail in July-August.
BEST SEASON
Rudranath temple opens May (Akshaya Tritiya). Wildflowers. Good weather. Both temples accessible.
AUTUMN
Clear mountain views. Good trail conditions. Rudranath open till October. Brahma Kamal season ends.
KALPESHWAR ONLY
Rudranath closed in winter. Kalpeshwar stays open (only Kedar open year-round). Winter-only visit possible for Kalpeshwar alone.
All our treks start from Haridwar . Reach Haridwar first:
Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (35 km from Haridwar). Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru.
Haridwar Railway Station — overnight trains from Delhi take 5-6 hours.
Delhi ISBT to Haridwar by Volvo (6 hrs). State buses connect Haridwar to base towns.
Delhi to Haridwar 210 km (4-5 hrs via NH-58). Pickup from Delhi/Chandigarh/Dehradun on request.
Kalpeshwar and Rudranath are best treated as a 2-in-1 itinerary from Gopeshwar. Kalpeshwar (2200m, always open) is the day-trip warm-up; Rudranath (3-day trek via Sagar) is the main objective. Rudranath approaches through one of the finest rhododendron forests in Garhwal — in April–May the entire trail blazes red and pink. The bugyal (Panar Bugyal) just before the Rudranath temple area is a carpeted meadow that will stay in memory. Both temples close in winter and reopen in April.
