Kotdwar is a town in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, situated at the foot of the Garhwal Himalayas at around 400 metres above sea level. It is connected to Haridwar by rail and road and is the nearest railhead for Lansdowne (40 km) and the interior parts of Pauri Garhwal. The town sits on the edge of the Shivalik range where the forests begin and the plains end.
The Sidhnath Shiva Temple on the banks of the Khoh River is the main religious attraction in Kotdwar. The temple is set in a wooded area and is particularly visited during Shivratri. The Durga Devi Temple on a small hill above the town also draws regular devotees. Kalagarh Tiger Reserve, about 50 km from Kotdwar, is the western part of the Corbett Tiger Reserve and offers jeep safaris with good chances of seeing elephants, leopards, deer, and a variety of birds including fish eagles and pied kingfishers along the Ramganga River.
Lansdowne, the Garhwal Rifles cantonment hill station at 1706m, is 40 km from Kotdwar and makes an excellent day trip or overnight extension. The Khoh River near Kotdwar is good for swimming in summer. The town is the starting point for the road to Pauri, Khirsu, and other interior Pauri Garhwal destinations. Kotdwar can be combined with Lansdowne on a short 2-3 day Garhwal hills package from Haridwar.

Kotdwar is a transit point more than a destination — most people pass through here on the way to Lansdowne (40 km) or Pauri (80 km). But if you stop here, Sidhbali Temple is genuinely worth visiting. The temple complex on the Khoh riverbank is atmospheric and not crowded compared to Haridwar temples. Kalagarh Tiger Reserve (30 km) is the real draw for wildlife enthusiasts — it is less busy than the main Corbett zones and has excellent elephant sightings. Kotdwar has a good train connection from Delhi (Aastha Express, 5 hrs) making it an easy overnight option for a quick Lansdowne weekend trip.
