About Lipulekh Pass Trek

Lipulekh Pass (5334m) is a high mountain pass at the tri-junction of India, Nepal, and China (Tibet) in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The pass has been the traditional route for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage via India, used for centuries by traders and pilgrims. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (KMY) organised by the Ministry of External Affairs uses this route. In 2020, India completed a road (BRO) from Dharchula to Lipulekh as part of the strategic border road project.

The trek/drive to Lipulekh starts from Dharchula (the last major town in Pithoragarh) and goes via the Kali river valley through Gunji, Nabhi Danda, and Kalapani. The area around Kalapani has historical significance as it is a disputed tri-border region. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as the altitude rises — wide open glaciated valleys, river gorges, and distant Tibet plateau views as you near the pass.

The approach to Lipulekh now has a BRO road reaching close to the pass (road status changes — some sections may require trekking). Inner Line Permit is mandatory. This route also passes through the Adi Kailash area (Jolingkong) and Om Parvat viewpoint (Nabhi Danda), making it possible to combine the Adi Kailash Om Parvat visit with the Lipulekh pass approach. Dev Yatra organises Lipulekh Pass trek packages with all ILP, Dharchula transport, accommodation, and guide.

Planning Lipulekh Pass Visit

The Lipulekh Pass road is a significant infrastructure achievement — what was once a 5-day trek is now a 2-day drive. The Byans Valley and the view from the pass into Tibet are extraordinary. Om Parvat (5148m) with its natural OM snow symbol is visible from Nabhidhang. The altitude at Lipulekh is 5334m — people with no altitude experience should acclimatise at least one night at Gunji (3200m). Inner Line Permit (ILP) is essential and is obtained in advance. The entire Kumaon high Himalaya circuit takes 5–7 days from Pithoragarh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is Lipulekh Pass trek the same as Kailash Mansarovar route?
The Indian portion of the route is the same. The Government of India's Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (via Lipulekh) enters Tibet at this pass. Our trek covers the Indian side up to and including Lipulekh Pass — not the Tibet portion.
Q. Is Inner Line Permit required?
Yes. The entire route above Dharchula is in an Inner Line Permit zone due to proximity to the international border. We handle all ILP paperwork.
Q. Is there a road to Lipulekh now?
Yes. The BRO road reaches close to the pass (5334m). Road sections and trek sections vary each season depending on maintenance. Our itinerary is flexible between road and trek depending on conditions at the time.
Q. Can we see Tibet from Lipulekh Pass?
Yes. From Lipulekh Pass the Tibetan plateau is visible to the north. Mount Kailash itself is about 100 km away in Tibet and is not directly visible from the pass.
Q. Can foreigners do this trek?
Currently this area has restrictions for foreign nationals. The trek is primarily for Indian nationals. Please check with us for current permit status for international visitors.
Q. Can I drive to Lipulekh Pass now?
Yes, a motorable road to Lipulekh Pass was completed in 2020. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can reach the pass. The road is open from approximately May to October. Inner Line Permit is required for the restricted zone from Nagling onwards. Dev Yatra provides 4WD vehicle with driver and all permit arrangements.
Q. What is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route via Lipulekh?
The Lipulekh route for Kailash Mansarovar goes: Delhi → Kathgodam → Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Tawaghat → Gunji → Nabhidhang → Lipulekh Pass → Tibet. From Lipulekh you cross into Tibet and proceed to Taklakot and then Lake Mansarovar and Mt Kailash. The Indian side is managed by MEA and requires registration.
