Nainital, called the "Lake District of India," is a charming hill station at 2084 metres in the Kumaon Himalayas. The town is built around the Naini Lake — an emerald-coloured natural lake about 1.5 km long and 0.5 km wide — and the surrounding forested hills rise steeply from the lakeshore. The Mall Road runs along one side of the lake and is the main commercial and social area, with shops, restaurants, and the boating jetty. The lake is the heart of Nainital and practically every activity in town revolves around it.
Snow View Point (2270m) is reached by a 700-metre ropeway from the town and offers a clear panoramic view of the Himalayan range on a good day, including Nanda Devi (7816m), Nanda Kot, and Trisul. The Nainital Zoo, one of the few high-altitude zoos in India, has Himalayan leopard, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, red fox, and sambhar deer. Eco Cave Gardens is a series of interconnected natural caves near the zoo — a popular attraction for families and children.
Bhimtal, 22 km from Nainital, is a larger and quieter lake with a small island at its centre. Sattal (7 lakes) and Naukuchiatal (9-cornered lake) are further sister lakes within a short drive. Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) is a 4 km trek from town through forest giving good views of the Doon Valley and Nainital. Dev Yatra plans Nainital tour packages from Haridwar with comfortable accommodation, lake boating, and complete sightseeing.
Rowboat and paddle boat rides on the stunning 1.5 km emerald lake. Best at sunrise and sunset.
Cable car to 2270m — panoramic views of Nanda Devi and Himalayan peaks. Best on clear winter mornings.
High-altitude zoo with Himalayan leopard, snow leopard, black bear, and sambhar deer in natural settings.
Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal — quieter and more scenic alternatives to Nainital within 30 km.

Nainital gets extremely crowded in May and June — if possible, visit in March, April, October, or November for a calmer experience. The Mall Road has vehicle restrictions in the evening during peak season, so walk rather than drive. Book hotels early for the May-June season as good lakeside properties fill up months in advance. The lake is beautiful at dawn before the town wakes up — try to get down to the boat ghat early for the morning light on the water.
Snow View Point cable car opens at 8 AM — go early for clearest views before haze sets in. The zoo is good but takes about 2 hours. Eco Cave Gardens is better for children than adults. Naukuchiatal (9-cornered lake, 26 km) is the deepest and least commercialized of the three sister lakes.
