About Namik Glacier Trek

Namik Glacier is one of the three accessible glaciers in the Bageshwar district of Kumaon Himalaya — the others being Pindari and Kafni. Of the three, Namik is the least visited and the most remote, which means it offers a genuine wilderness glacier experience. The glacier is fed by the Nagling peak (6312m) and other high peaks and sits at around 4200m. The Namik river (a tributary of the Saryu/Sarayu river) flows from the glacier snout.

The trek to Namik Glacier starts from Lilam village in the Saryu valley (Bageshwar district). The trail goes through dense forest and alpine terrain, passing through the villages of Nagling, Harkanshi, and Nainidhar before reaching the glacier snout. The route is technically easy (no glacier crossing required to reach the snout) but the distances and altitude make it Moderate-Difficult grade.

Namik Glacier combines well with the Pindari Glacier trek — both are in Bageshwar district and can be combined in a 10-12 day trip from Haridwar. Dev Yatra organises Namik Glacier trek packages from Haridwar with Bageshwar transport, camping, meals, and local guide.

Before Namik Glacier Trek

Namik Glacier is exactly the kind of route you go to when you have done Milam and Pindari and want something even less travelled. Very few organised trekking groups come here. The approach through the Namik river valley has good forest and occasional Himalayan views. The glacier snout at 4300m has the characteristic turquoise meltwater pools of glaciated terrain. June and September–October are the practical windows. Inner Line Permit may be required — check with the DM office in Bageshwar before setting out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is Namik different from Pindari Glacier?
Pindari is more developed with guesthouses along the route (the Pindari DAV trail). Namik is wilder with camping only. Namik has fewer visitors and a more genuine wilderness feel. Pindari glacier snout is at 3820m, Namik at 4200m — Namik goes higher.
Q. Is Namik Glacier suitable for beginners?
Moderate-Difficult. The trek is doable for those with some prior trekking and good fitness. No glacier crossing required — just reaching the snout. The distances (10 km per day) and altitude (4200m) are the main challenges.
Q. How do we reach Lilam from Bageshwar?
Lilam is about 35 km from Bageshwar by road via Kapkote. Road is motorable by jeep. We arrange jeeps from Bageshwar.
Q. Can Namik and Pindari be done in one trip?
Yes. A 10-12 day trip from Haridwar can cover both glaciers. The Pindari route starts from Loharkhet (different side of Bageshwar). We arrange combined itineraries on request.
Q. Are there any guesthouses on the Namik trail?
Basic Forest Department rest houses exist at some stops (availability not guaranteed). We plan the trek with tent camping for all nights to ensure reliability.
Q. Is the Namik Glacier trek crowded?
No — Namik Glacier is one of the least visited glacier treks in Kumaon. You are unlikely to meet other trekking groups on the route. This makes it excellent for those seeking true Himalayan wilderness solitude away from the popular Milam and Pindari routes.
Q. What permits are needed for Namik Glacier?
Forest department entry permits for the Namik Valley are required. These are obtained from the forest department in Bageshwar. Dev Yatra handles all permit paperwork on behalf of guests.
Q. How difficult is the Namik Glacier Trek?
The Namik Glacier Trek is rated Moderate to Difficult . The route covers approximately 45 km reaching an altitude of 4920m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Namik Glacier.
Q. What is the best time for Namik Glacier Trek?
The ideal season for the Namik Glacier Trek is May to June, September to October . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Namik Glacier departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Munsiyari from Haridwar?
Munsiyari — the base/starting point for the Namik Glacier Trek — is approximately 370 km from Haridwar , a drive of 9–11 hours. Dev Yatra includes comfortable vehicle transport from Haridwar to the trek base in all Namik Glacier packages. Road conditions on mountain routes can vary by season — our experienced drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Q. What permits are needed for Namik Glacier Trek?
Trekkers on the Namik Glacier Trek must carry valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or voter ID). Forest department entry permits may be required for restricted zones. Dev Yatra handles all permit formalities on your behalf before departure — no separate government office visits required. Simply share your ID details at booking and we take care of the rest for your Namik Glacier.
