About Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek

Nanda Devi East (7434m) is the third highest peak in India and a twin of the main Nanda Devi (7816m — second highest in India). The east base camp sits at approximately 4600m in the Gori Ganga valley region of Pithoragarh district, Kumaon. The approach passes through the Milam valley and then branches north via the Longstaff glacier drainage towards the Nanda Devi East base camp area.

T.G. Longstaff made the first significant exploration of this area in 1905. The Longstaff Col (5910m) links the Nanda Devi East approach with the Nanda Devi Sanctuary on the Garhwal side. The base camp area gives views of Nanda Devi East, Nanda Devi main peak, the Longstaff glacier, and surrounding high Kumaon-Garhwal peaks. This is one of the most remote and physically demanding treks in Uttarakhand.

The Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek requires an Inner Line Permit and is recommended only for very fit and experienced trekkers with prior 5000m+ experience. Dev Yatra organises the logistics for this expedition-style trek from Haridwar including ILP, all transport, Kumaon guide, camping, and porter support. The route shares the Milam Glacier approach to Munsiyari.

Before Nanda Devi East Trek

The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is UNESCO World Heritage and access is strictly controlled. The inner sanctuary is completely closed to trekkers. The approach to East Base Camp goes through the buffer zone and restricted area — ILP required. This is a remote route with very few trekking groups — expect genuine wilderness with minimal human contact. Nanda Devi East (7434m) is a dramatic ice architecture that very few trekkers see this closely. Munsiyari is the base (275 km from Kathgodam). Build in extra acclimatisation days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How difficult is the Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek?
Very Difficult — one of the most demanding non-technical treks in Uttarakhand. High altitude (4600m base camp), multi-day glacier approach, significant daily distances (12-18 km), and remoteness all contribute. Prior experience at 5000m+ and ILP required.
Q. Is Inner Line Permit required?
Yes. The Gori Ganga valley above Milam is in a restricted border zone. We handle all ILP paperwork.
Q. Who was Longstaff?
T.G. Longstaff (1875-1964) was a British mountaineer who explored the Kumaon and Garhwal Himalaya extensively in 1905-1907. He made the first ascent of Trisul (7120m) in 1907 — the first ascent of any 7000m+ peak in history. The Longstaff glacier and Col are named after him.
Q. Can we see both Nanda Devi peaks from base camp?
Yes. Both Nanda Devi East (7434m) and Nanda Devi Main (7816m) are visible from the base camp area and the approach glacier. It is one of the few points where both great peaks can be seen together.
Q. What is the difference between Nanda Devi East and Nanda Devi Main?
Nanda Devi Main (7816m) is the second highest Indian peak and is in Chamoli district, Garhwal. Nanda Devi East (7434m) is 3 km east of the main peak in Pithoragarh district, Kumaon. They are twin peaks separated by a linking ridge.
Q. What altitude is Nanda Devi East Base Camp?
The base camp for Nanda Devi East approaches sits at approximately 4300 metres. The trek from Munsiyari involves several days of trekking through remote valleys, crossing rivers, and ascending moraine terrain. This is an advanced trek requiring prior high-altitude experience.
Q. Is Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek inside a sanctuary?
The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) restricts the inner sanctuary, but the approach to East Base Camp is in the buffer zone/restricted area requiring Inner Line Permit. Dev Yatra handles all permit applications and complies fully with sanctuary regulations.
