9 Days · 4600m Base Camp · Second Highest Indian Peak · Longstaff Glacier
Nanda Devi East (7434m) is the third highest peak in India and a twin of the main Nanda Devi (7816m — second highest in India). The east base camp sits at approximately 4600m in the Gori Ganga valley region of Pithoragarh district, Kumaon. The approach passes through the Milam valley and then branches north via the Longstaff glacier drainage towards the Nanda Devi East base camp area.
T.G. Longstaff made the first significant exploration of this area in 1905. The Longstaff Col (5910m) links the Nanda Devi East approach with the Nanda Devi Sanctuary on the Garhwal side. The base camp area gives views of Nanda Devi East, Nanda Devi main peak, the Longstaff glacier, and surrounding high Kumaon-Garhwal peaks. This is one of the most remote and physically demanding treks in Uttarakhand.
The Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek requires an Inner Line Permit and is recommended only for very fit and experienced trekkers with prior 5000m+ experience. Dev Yatra organises the logistics for this expedition-style trek from Haridwar including ILP, all transport, Kumaon guide, camping, and porter support. The route shares the Milam Glacier approach to Munsiyari.
Close-up views of Nanda Devi East (7434m). Third highest Indian peak. Exceptional high-altitude scenery.
Multi-day glacier approach following Longstaff's 1905 route. True exploration feel.
Main Nanda Devi (7816m) also visible from base camp approach. Two great peaks in one view.
Longstaff (1905), Shipton-Tilman (1930s), and other legends explored this area. Rich mountaineering history.
BEST SEASON
Best glacier access. Good weather windows. Snow manageable. Most recommended time.
AUTUMN
Post-monsoon clarity. Good for views. October risky due to early winter.
INACCESSIBLE
All approach routes snowbound. Trek not possible.
All our treks start from Haridwar . Reach Haridwar first:
Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (35 km from Haridwar). Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru.
Haridwar Railway Station — overnight trains from Delhi take 5-6 hours.
Delhi ISBT to Haridwar by Volvo (6 hrs). State buses connect Haridwar to base towns.
Delhi to Haridwar 210 km (4-5 hrs via NH-58). Pickup from Delhi/Chandigarh/Dehradun on request.
The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is UNESCO World Heritage and access is strictly controlled. The inner sanctuary is completely closed to trekkers. The approach to East Base Camp goes through the buffer zone and restricted area — ILP required. This is a remote route with very few trekking groups — expect genuine wilderness with minimal human contact. Nanda Devi East (7434m) is a dramatic ice architecture that very few trekkers see this closely. Munsiyari is the base (275 km from Kathgodam). Build in extra acclimatisation days.
