About Panchachuli Base Camp Trek

Panchachuli is a massif of five snow-capped peaks (Panchachuli I to V) in the Pithoragarh district of Kumaon Himalaya. The highest peak, Panchachuli II, stands at 6904m. The name Panchachuli means "five hearths" — according to Mahabharata legend, this is where the Pandavas cooked their last meal before ascending to Heaven. The five peaks stand in a row creating a dramatic and distinctive skyline that is especially visible from the Darma and Johar valleys.

The base camp trek to Panchachuli starts from Dharchula (the last major town in Pithoragarh before the Tibet border) and goes via the Darma valley, passing through Khaliya and Duktu villages. The Darma valley is inhabited by the Shauka tribal community who have historically traded with Tibet. The trails pass through alpine meadows, river crossings, and glacial moraines before reaching the base camp area at around 4400m.

This trek requires an Inner Line Permit as the Darma valley is in a restricted border area. The trek is rated Difficult due to the high altitude, multi-day nature, and remoteness of the Darma valley. Dev Yatra organises Panchachuli Base Camp trek packages from Haridwar with complete Inner Line Permit handling, Dharchula transport, all camping and meals, experienced Kumaon guide, and porter support.

Before Panchachuli Base Camp Trek

Panchachuli Base Camp trek in the Darma Valley requires more logistical planning than most Kumaon treks. The Darma Valley has Inner Line Permit requirements from Tawaghat onwards. The drive from Pithoragarh to Dharchula (94 km, 3 hrs) and then to Tawaghat (30 km more, 1 hr) is the start. The valley villages — Sela, Tidu, Baling, Baun, Dugtu — have ancient wooden houses with carved facades that are themselves worth the journey. The base camp view of the five Panchachuli summits from the south is a completely different perspective from the famous Munsiyari view.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Panchachuli massif?
Panchachuli is a group of five Himalayan peaks in Pithoragarh district, Kumaon. The highest, Panchachuli II (6904m), was first climbed in 1992 by an Indo-Tibetan Border Police team. The five-peak skyline is one of the most recognisable in the Kumaon Himalaya.
Q. Is Inner Line Permit required?
Yes. The Darma valley is in a restricted border zone. Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for Indian nationals. We arrange the ILP through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate office in Pithoragarh/Dharchula.
Q. Who are the Shaukas?
The Shaukas (or Rung) are a tribal community of the Darma, Byans, and Chaudans valleys in Pithoragarh. They are traditionally pastoralists and traders who maintained trade routes to Tibet. Their villages are largely empty in winter as they descend to lower villages.
Q. How far is Dharchula from Haridwar?
About 350 km via Pithoragarh. Drive takes 12-14 hours. We do the drive in two days with an overnight stop at Almora.
Q. Can we do this trek in 6 days?
6-7 days are the minimum with good road access to Duktu. The 8-day version gives a more comfortable pace with better acclimatisation and time at base camp.
Q. What is the Darma Valley?
Darma Valley is a remote trans-Himalayan valley in the Pithoragarh district, near the Nepal border. It is inhabited by the Raji and Rangpa tribal communities with distinct architecture, festivals, and traditions. The valley was historically a trade route to Tibet. It requires Inner Line Permit to visit.
Q. What altitude is Panchachuli Base Camp?
