5 Days · 3700m Bugyal · Rudraprayag · Kedarnath & Chaukhamba Views
Panwali Kantha is an alpine meadow (bugyal) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand at approximately 3700 metres. The meadow offers excellent views of the Kedarnath peak group and the Chaukhamba massif and is relatively less crowded than the more famous bugyals at Chopta and Auli. The area is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
The trek to Panwali Kantha starts from Sari village (the same base as Deoria Tal trek) or from Ukhimath area. The trail goes through dense forest initially before opening into the wide alpine meadow. The meadow is rich in Himalayan wildflowers in summer and gives excellent mountain views. Panwali Kantha is best known among local trekkers but is gaining attention among those who want a quieter alternative to Chopta.
Dev Yatra organises Panwali Kantha trek packages from Haridwar including Ukhimath transport, camping on the bugyal, meals, and an experienced guide from the Rudraprayag area. The trek can also be combined with Deoria Tal and Tungnath-Chandrashila in a week-long Rudraprayag region itinerary.
Kedarnath peak (6940m) and Chaukhamba massif (7138m) visible from the bugyal. Outstanding Garhwal peak panorama.
Much quieter than Chopta and Auli bugyals. Genuine wilderness meadow feel without commercial crowds.
Sanctuary habitat with good birdlife and Himalayan wildlife. Snow leopard territory.
Both start near Sari/Ukhimath. 7-8 day Rudraprayag package covers Panwali Kantha and Deoria Tal.
BEST SEASON
Wildflowers on bugyal in May-June. Clear Kedarnath and Chaukhamba views. Most pleasant camping.
AUTUMN
Clear mountain views. Less crowded. Good photography. Early winter in November.
SNOW SEASON
Bugyal under snow. Access more difficult. Suitable for winter trekkers with proper gear.
All our treks start from Haridwar . Reach Haridwar first:
Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (35 km from Haridwar). Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru.
Haridwar Railway Station — overnight trains from Delhi take 5-6 hours.
Delhi ISBT to Haridwar by Volvo (6 hrs). State buses connect Haridwar to base towns.
Delhi to Haridwar 210 km (4-5 hrs via NH-58). Pickup from Delhi/Chandigarh/Dehradun on request.
Panwali Kantha is best combined with the Chopta–Tungnath itinerary. After the Tungnath–Chandrashila visit, extending to Panwali Kantha adds 2 days and a completely different perspective — the Kedarnath dome and Chaukhamba from the north side of the ridge. The Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary boundary means wildlife rules apply — no campfires in some zones. Bharal (blue sheep) sightings are reasonably common in October–November. Cell coverage is absent above Chopta — download offline maps before leaving.
