12 Days · 5819m Summit · Gangotri Region · Technical · IMF Permit Peak
Rudragaira Peak (5819m) is a technical mountain peak in the Gangotri region of the Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. It requires an Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) permit and is classified as a mountaineering expedition peak. The peak is situated in the Rudugaira glacier valley, branching off from the main Gangotri glacier approach. The summit involves mixed terrain — snow, ice, and rock — with sections up to PD/AD alpine grade.
The approach to Rudragaira base camp goes via Gangotri and Bhojwasa, then branches into the Rudugaira nala (valley). The base camp is set up at around 4400-4500m. The route to the summit from base camp involves crossing crevassed glacier sections, mixed snow-rock ridges, and a final summit push on steep snow/ice. The views from the summit include Shivling (6543m), Bhagirathi I, II, III, and the Gangotri glacier basin.
Dev Yatra organises Rudragaira Peak expeditions for certified mountaineering groups. IMF permit application, liaison officer arrangement, all base camp and summit camping, cook, porter, and climbing guide are all included. A minimum of Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) and prior 5000m+ experience is required to participate in this expedition.
A genuine Himalayan summit above the glacier line. Technical mixed terrain. Highly rewarding for trained mountaineers.
Shivling (6543m) and all three Bhagirathi peaks visible from summit. Outstanding Gangotri glacier panorama.
Crevassed glacier, snow ridge, and rock sections on the summit route. Real alpine mountaineering experience.
Official Indian Mountaineering Foundation permitted peak. Expedition structure with liaison officer and proper permits.
PRE-MONSOON
Best season for Gangotri region peaks. Stable weather windows. Good snow consolidation. Most expeditions in this window.
POST-MONSOON
Good post-monsoon stability. Clear skies. September best — October becomes cold quickly at this altitude.
NOT POSSIBLE
Gangotri closed. Heavy snow at all levels. Expedition impossible November-April.

Rudragaira (5819m) is a genuine mountaineering objective — not a trekking peak. The approach through the Rudragaira valley is stunning (very close to Gangotri glacier and Bhagirathi peaks) but the technical route on the upper mountain requires rope, crampons, and ice axe competency. NIM (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering) in Uttarkashi is the best resource for guides and information on this peak. Book several months in advance for the May and September windows. IMF peak fee and forest clearance are required. Budget 14–16 days for the full expedition from Haridwar.
