About Sunderdhunga Trek

Sunderdhunga valley translates as "beautiful rocks" and the name is appropriate — the valley in the Bageshwar district of Kumaon Himalaya is dramatically scenic, flanked by high rocky ridges and peaks including Maiktoli (6803m) and Tharkot (6099m). The Sunderdhunga glacier feeds the Sunderdhunga river which joins the Pindar river at Khati village. The valley is a high cirque ending at the glacier base camp area at around 4240m.

The trek starts from Khati village (2200m) in the Pindar river valley (Bageshwar district). The trail goes up the Sunderdhunga nala through forest, then opens into a rocky glacial valley. The combination of the glacial landscape, surrounding high peaks, and relative remoteness makes Sunderdhunga one of the finest undiscovered glacier valley treks in Kumaon. It receives far fewer visitors than the Milam Glacier or Pindari Glacier routes.

The Sunderdhunga trek is rated Difficult due to the rocky, rough terrain in the upper valley and the altitude. River crossings can be challenging in monsoon season. Best visited in May-June or September-October. Dev Yatra organises Sunderdhunga trek packages from Haridwar with Bageshwar/Khati transport, camping, meals, and guide.

Before Sunderdhunga Trek

Sunderdhunga is not the right trek if this is your first time in the Kumaon Himalaya. The terrain above Khati village gets quickly into rocky, unmaintained moraine and the valley is genuinely remote. But for experienced trekkers who want raw Himalayan wilderness, Sunderdhunga delivers what more popular routes have lost: no signage, no teahouses, no cell coverage, no crowds. The smooth polished granite boulders that give the valley its name are remarkable — glacially shaped over thousands of years. 6–8 days from Bageshwar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does Sunderdhunga mean?
Sunderdhunga translates from Kumaoni/Hindi as "beautiful rocks" (sunder = beautiful, dhunga = rocks). The name refers to the striking rocky landscape of the glacial valley.
Q. Is Sunderdhunga suitable for beginners?
No. Difficult grade. The rough rocky terrain, altitude (4240m), and multi-day nature require prior trekking experience. Suitable for those who have done at least 2-3 earlier high-altitude treks.
Q. How does Sunderdhunga compare to Pindari Glacier?
Both are in Bageshwar district. Pindari is more developed and visited. Sunderdhunga is rougher, more remote, and offers better views of high peaks. Sunderdhunga is harder but more rewarding.
Q. How far is Bageshwar from Haridwar?
About 220 km via Haldwani and Almora. Drive takes 7-8 hours. We usually do this in one long day.
Q. Are there any facilities in the Sunderdhunga valley?
Khati village has basic guesthouses and provisions. Beyond Khati, the valley is wilderness — no permanent facilities. All camping equipment must be carried in.
Q. Is Sunderdhunga trek difficult?
Yes, Sunderdhunga is one of the more challenging treks in Kumaon. The terrain is rocky, involves river crossings, and ascends to high-altitude moraine and glacier zones above 4000m. Prior experience of multi-day high-altitude trekking is essential. Not for first-timers.
Q. How do I reach the Sunderdhunga trek base?
The trek starts from Khati village, which is reached by road from Bageshwar (40 km, 2 hrs). Bageshwar is connected by road from Almora (90 km) and Kathgodam (176 km). Dev Yatra provides transport from Kathgodam or Bageshwar to Khati.
Q. How difficult is the Sunderdhunga Trek?
The Sunderdhunga Trek is rated Moderate to Difficult . The route covers approximately 42 km reaching an altitude of 4900m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Sunderdhunga.
Q. What is the best time for Sunderdhunga Trek?
