4 Days · 3 Nights · Tehri Lake · Chamba · Dhanaulti · Kanatal · Surkanda
Tehri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand covers a large stretch of the middle Garhwal Himalayas from the plains of the Ganga to the high-altitude villages near Kedarnath. The district is named after the historic Tehri princely state. The most significant recent development in the district is the Tehri Dam, which at 261 metres is among the tallest dams in the world, creating the Tehri reservoir — a large blue lake surrounded by forested hills that has become a water sports and tourism destination.
Chamba (1676m), 12 km from New Tehri, is a pleasant market town with apple orchards and good mountain surroundings. Dhanaulti (2286m), 29 km from New Tehri, is a quiet hill station with an ECO Park maintained by the Forest Department. Kanatal (2600m), 17 km from Dhanaulti, is a camping and forest walk destination. Surkanda Devi Temple (2757m), 8 km from Kaddukhal, is the highest point easily accessible on the Tehri-Mussoorie road and has excellent Himalayan views from the summit.
The Tehri Garhwal hills circuit — New Tehri, Chamba, Kanatal, Dhanaulti, and Surkanda Devi — gives a varied experience of lake, hills, forests, camping, temples, and Himalayan views all within a compact area. The circuit can be done in 3-4 days from Haridwar without covering very large distances. Dev Yatra offers this Tehri Garhwal hill circuit as a well-organised package from Haridwar with comfortable accommodation at each stop.

Tehri Garhwal district is underrated as a destination — most people drive through it on the way to Uttarkashi or Badrinath without stopping. The lake at New Tehri is genuinely spectacular and the water sports operation is well-managed. Dhanaulti (75 km from New Tehri) and Kanatal make a natural extension. If you are coming from Delhi (300 km, 8 hrs), consider breaking the journey at Rishikesh or New Tehri rather than pushing straight to Uttarkashi. Kunjapuri Temple (sunrise from here is outstanding) is 45 km from New Tehri — worth waking up early for on a clear day.
