About Traill's Pass Trek

Traill's Pass (5312m) is one of the most historically significant high mountain passes in the Kumaon Himalaya, named after G.W. Traill, the Commissioner of Kumaon from 1816 to 1835 who first crossed the pass in 1830. The pass connects the Pindar glacier valley (Bageshwar district) with the Gori Ganga valley (Pithoragarh district) and is one of the few passes linking the two great glacier drainage systems of Kumaon.

The route starts from the Pindari Glacier trek trail (Loharkhet, Bageshwar) and, after reaching the Pindari glacier, climbs over the pass into the Milam valley approach. The pass crossing involves significant glacier travel, crevasse navigation, and steep snow on both sides. The views from the pass include Nanda Devi, Nanda Khat, Changuch, and the surrounding high peaks of the Kumaon Himalayan range.

Traill's Pass is not a trek for anyone below expert level. The crossing requires glacier travel, crampon and ice axe competence, rope skills, and high-altitude fitness. The route is rarely attempted and guides with specific knowledge of the pass are few. Dev Yatra can organise Traill's Pass expeditions for qualified groups with all ILP, camping, technical equipment support, and an experienced Kumaon mountaineer guide.

About Trails Pass Trek

Trails Pass in the Johar Valley extends beyond the Milam Glacier route into even more remote terrain. This is genuinely an expedition and requires all the logistics of the Milam trek plus the pass crossing capability. Very little documented information exists about this route in English — it is known primarily to local Bhotia guides and ITBP. Come with experienced local guiding, full camping self-sufficiency, and emergency communication (satellite phone). This is not a route to improvise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who was G.W. Traill?
George William Traill (1792-1847) was the Commissioner of Kumaon under British rule. He was an avid explorer who crossed the pass in 1830 during his survey of the Kumaon region. He also documented Pindari and other glaciers in his administration records.
Q. Is Traill's Pass suitable for strong trekkers without mountaineering background?
No. The crossing requires glacier travel with crevasse risk, rope work, crampon use, and high-altitude fitness. This is more an alpine mountaineering route than a trek. BMC background strongly recommended.
Q. What is the ILP situation for Traill's Pass?
The Milam valley side (Gori Ganga valley, Pithoragarh) requires an Inner Line Permit. The Pindari side (Bageshwar) does not. We arrange the ILP in advance.
Q. How many people attempt Traill's Pass each year?
Very few — likely fewer than 50 trekking parties per year. It is one of the least-attempted high passes in Kumaon due to its technical demands and remote location.
Q. Can this be done in less than 10 days?
Not safely. The acclimatisation days before the pass crossing are essential. Rushing the altitude gain increases risk on the technical pass crossing.
Q. How does Trails Pass compare to Milam Glacier trek?
The Milam Glacier trek is more popular and better documented. Trails Pass is an advanced extension for trekkers who have already done Milam and want to explore the higher cross-pass routes. Both start from Munsiyari. The pass crossing requires glacier travel experience not needed for the standard Milam trek.
Q. What permits are needed for Trails Pass?
Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for the Johar Valley as it lies in the restricted zone near the China border. Dev Yatra handles ILP applications on behalf of guests from the relevant district authorities.
Q. How difficult is the Trails Pass Trek?
The Trails Pass Trek is rated Moderate to Difficult . The route covers approximately 35 km reaching an altitude of 4400m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Trails Pass.
Q. What is the best time for Trails Pass Trek?
The ideal season for the Trails Pass Trek is May to June, September to October . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Trails Pass departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Guptkashi from Haridwar?
Guptkashi — the base/starting point for the Trails Pass Trek — is approximately 240 km from Haridwar , a drive of 6–8 hours. Dev Yatra includes comfortable vehicle transport from Haridwar to the trek base in all Trails Pass packages. Road conditions on mountain routes can vary by season — our experienced drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Q. What permits are needed for Trails Pass Trek?
Trekkers on the Trails Pass Trek must carry valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or voter ID). Forest department entry permits may be required for restricted zones. Dev Yatra handles all permit formalities on your behalf before departure — no separate government office visits required. Simply share your ID details at booking and we take care of the rest for your Trails Pass.
