4 Days · 4130m Summit · Highest Shiva Temple · 360° Himalayan View
Tungnath Chandrashila trek is one of the most rewarding short treks in Uttarakhand — combining a visit to the world's highest Shiva temple (Tungnath, 3680m) with a climb to Chandrashila summit (4130m) for a 360° panorama of the Garhwal Himalayas. Starting from Chopta (2680m), the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand," the route covers 4.5 km one way. Chopta is 230 km from haridwar and approximately 450 km from delhi via Rishikesh and Rudraprayag. Dev Yatra offers fully guided packages from haridwar and delhi with transport, Chopta accommodation, certified guide, and all permits.
The climb from Chopta takes 3–4 hours to the summit at a relaxed pace. The trail is stone-paved from Chopta to Tungnath (3.5 km) then a further 1 km to Chandrashila peak — an elevation gain of 1450m. Difficulty level is easy to moderate, suitable for beginners, families with children above 10, and senior pilgrims. April and May bring brilliant rhododendron bloom on the trail — the most colourful season for this trek. A popular extension is the deoriatal chopta circuit which adds a night at Deoria Tal lake before arriving at Chopta base.
From Chandrashila summit the view includes Nanda Devi (7816m), Trishul (7120m), Chaukhamba (7138m), Kedarnath peak, Neelkanth, and Bandarpunch. Best time is April to June and September to November — clear skies, open temple, and sharp mountain views. December and winter months see the temple closed and roads snow-blocked. Pilgrims combining shrines can do a kedarnath tungnath chandrashila trek on a 6–7 day Garhwal circuit with Dev Yatra. Contact +91-8057146497 for cost, availability, and customised budget plans.

Tungnath Chandrashila is one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in Uttarakhand but a few things are worth knowing before you book. The trail from Chopta to Tungnath is stone-paved and can be steep in sections — trekking shoes with grip are essential, sandals or sneakers are not safe. The altitude at Chandrashila summit (4130m) is significant — people with heart conditions or severe asthma should consult a doctor before attempting the summit. Start the trek by 6–7 AM from Chopta to avoid afternoon cloud cover which often blocks summit views. Carry water, snacks and sunscreen as there are very few shops on the trail above Chopta. Tungnath temple opening date varies each year (usually after Akshaya Tritiya in April–May) — confirm with us before booking in early April. The road from Ukhimath to Chopta is a narrow mountain road — our drivers are experienced on this route.
The tungnath chandrashila trek is the most spiritually and scenically complete short trek in Garhwal. It combines a visit to Tungnath — the world's highest Shiva temple and one of the Panch Kedar shrines — with a climb to Chandrashila summit (4130m) for a 360° Himalayan panorama. The chopta base is 230 km from haridwar and 450 km from delhi via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag. Dev Yatra operates guided departures from haridwar, rishikesh, and dehradun with all-inclusive packages year-round.
Trek distance is 4.5 km one way from Chopta to Chandrashila — 9 km round trip. Climb duration is 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down. Elevation gain from Chopta (2680m) to summit (4130m) is 1450m — one of the highest accessible day-trek summits from a road-head in Uttarakhand. Difficulty is easy to moderate with a stone-paved trail from Chopta to Tungnath followed by a short rocky section to Chandrashila. A certified local guide and all permit formalities are included in every Dev Yatra package.
Best time to visit is April–June and September–November. May is the most popular month — temple open, rhododendrons in bloom, clear skies. October gives the sharpest peak views after monsoon. December sees the temple closed and roads potentially snow-blocked — only for experienced winter trekkers. A popular extended itinerary adds a night at Deoria Tal lake before Chopta, creating the deoriatal chopta circuit. Those combining pilgrimages can do a kedarnath extension on a 6–7 day Garhwal circuit with Dev Yatra.
Dev Yatra offers a customised tungnath chandrashila trek package from delhi with AC transport, Chopta accommodation, certified guide, all meals, and sanctuary entry fees. Cost and budget can be adjusted by group size, hotel category, and trip duration. To get cost details, availability, and a personalised itinerary, call or WhatsApp +91-8057146497.
