About Unta Dhura Pass Trek

Unta Dhura (5322m) means the "camel pass" — the name comes from the silhouette of the pass ridgeline which resembles a camel's hump. The pass connects the Milam valley with the Ralam valley in the Pithoragarh district of Kumaon Himalaya, allowing a traverse between two important glacier valleys in the region. The views from the pass include Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Rajrambha, and the Nepal Himalayan range.

The typical route goes from the Milam valley side — starting at Munsiyari, trekking via Milam Glacier, crossing Unta Dhura, and descending into the Ralam valley. Alternatively it can be done in reverse. This traverse makes it possible to see both Milam and Ralam glaciers in a single 7-8 day trip without backtracking. The upper section of both valley sides near the pass involves significant altitude and boulder/moraine terrain.

Unta Dhura requires prior high-altitude trekking experience (4000m+ minimum) and the ILP required for both valleys must be obtained. Dev Yatra organises Unta Dhura Pass trek packages from Haridwar with Munsiyari transport, all camping, experienced Kumaon guide, ILP arrangement, and porter support.

About Unta Dhura Crossing

Unta Dhura connects two restricted-zone valleys in the Pithoragarh district — both require ILP. The crossing at 5310m is serious and the Darma Valley approach to the pass is steep. The Darma Valley villages have remarkable wooden architecture and the Bhotia communities maintain traditions distinct from mainstream Kumaon. Do this route only after prior experience in the Panchachuli or Milam area. September–October gives the most stable weather window for the crossing. Navigation above Dugtu village requires an experienced local guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is it called Unta Dhura?
Unta means camel in Hindi. The pass ridge has a profile that resembles a camel's hump when viewed from the valley below — hence the name Camel Pass.
Q. Can Unta Dhura be done as a single valley and back?
Yes — you can approach from the Milam valley, cross to the Ralam side for views, and return via the same route. But the valley traverse (Milam in, Ralam out) is more rewarding and efficient.
Q. Is this trek suitable for beginners?
No. Difficult grade. Prior 4000m+ trekking experience essential. The traverse involves significant daily distances and altitude gain.
Q. Do we need ILP for both valleys?
Yes. Both Milam and Ralam valleys require Inner Line Permits as they are in restricted border zones. We arrange both ILPs simultaneously.
Q. How far is Munsiyari from Haridwar?
About 320 km via Haldwani, Almora, and Pithoragarh. Drive takes 10-12 hours. We usually break the journey at Almora.
Q. Is Unta Dhura pass open in summer?
Unta Dhura is open approximately June–October, but the window varies year to year depending on snowfall. The pass itself is at 5310m and has significant snow even in summer. September–October is generally the most stable window with best visibility.
Q. What valley does Unta Dhura connect?
Unta Dhura connects the Darma Valley (south side) to the Byans Valley (Nabhidhang area, north side). The Byans Valley is the same valley that contains the Kailash Mansarovar road via Lipulekh Pass. This makes Unta Dhura a more direct mountain crossing between the two valleys.
Q. How difficult is the Unta Dhura Pass Trek?
The Unta Dhura Pass Trek is rated Difficult . The route covers approximately 55 km reaching an altitude of 5308m. Adequate physical fitness is required — we recommend regular cardio exercise for 2–3 weeks before departure. No prior climbing experience is needed for this trek. Dev Yatra provides an experienced local guide and all necessary safety equipment for the Unta Dhura Pass.
Q. What is the best time for Unta Dhura Pass Trek?
The ideal season for the Unta Dhura Pass Trek is June to September . Trails are clear, weather is stable and mountain views are at their best. Monsoon (July–mid-September) brings slippery paths and reduced visibility — not advisable. Winter snowfall blocks trails above 3000m from December to March. Dev Yatra schedules Unta Dhura Pass departures during optimal weather windows to ensure a safe and rewarding experience.
Q. How far is Munsiyari from Haridwar?
Munsiyari — the base/starting point for the Unta Dhura Pass Trek — is approximately 370 km from Haridwar , a drive of 9–11 hours. Dev Yatra includes comfortable vehicle transport from Haridwar to the trek base in all Unta Dhura Pass packages. Road conditions on mountain routes can vary by season — our experienced drivers ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Q. What permits are needed for Unta Dhura Pass Trek?
